Pioneer High School Senior Luke Matheis was named Defensive Lineman of the Year at the annual Trench Trophy presentation on Dec. 7.

Luke was among the finalists for the Trench Trophy, which is awarded annually to the top lineman in Western New York.

Luke received his award at Grapevine Banquets in Depew. A certificate recognizing his achievement from the office of New York governor Kathy Hochul arrived at school Dec. 19.

It has been a busy few weeks for Luke. Not only was he among the Trench Trophy finalists, but he also joined his family recently in presenting donated gifts to 13 veterans at the VA Hospital in Batavia who are without families. Luke used fund-raiser money he has collected the last several years in memory of his uncle, Scott Woolley.

Luke supplied seven albums for the vets' jukebox, along with snacks for the staff and all the veterans at the facility.
