A Pioneer Middle School 7th grader is being celebrated for saving a neighbor's life.

Leah Jorgensen, daughter of Jennifer and John Jorgensen of Arcade, is a Girl Scout cadette.

On Sept. 29, Leah was presented with the Girl Scout USA Lifesaving Award and Medal of Honor. Last May, Leah's heroic actions saved the life of her neighbor after her zero-turn lawnmower rolled on top of her.

According to the Girl Scouts Council of WNY, Leah used first aid training learned in scouting. She quickly called 911, gave them all the information, and searched for help. After going door-to-door to her other neighbors, she helped lift the lawnmower off and worked on shock prevention while they waited for the ambulance. This included a blanket for the neighbor, an umbrella to keep the sun away, and her comforting presence.

"This high honor is awarded to those whose exemplary actions reflect the Girl Scout Promise and Law in a life-saving act," Scouting officials said.  "Leah answered the call and, like her friends, family, and troop leader, we couldn't be more proud of our Girl Scout. Congratulations, Leah, and well done!"
