have courage and be kind

Arcade Elementary Acting Principal Kerry Slocum is sending out the following Back to School greeting to parents and students:

"I hope that you have been enjoying your summer! My kids and I have been busy with camping trips and other adventures (including endlessly recapturing our dog Scoot!), and I can't believe how many of you I've seen out and about!

"Our Summer Academy has ended, so now everyone here is gearing up for all of you to return in just a couple of weeks. It's amazing how quickly summer goes, so please do soak in enough of it to get us through those cold months ahead!

"I have several goals for this school year, one of which is to ensure regular communication with families. Often, teachers will share information from me, but please also check those backpacks for notes or newsletters, and please feel free to email or call me with any questions or concerns.

"A second goal is to increase opportunities for parents to volunteer in ways that support students in their learning; this would be in addition to, not in place of, those family fun events that you've come to know and love here at Arcade Elementary. However, don't be surprised to hear of some shared activities with our friends in Delevan, as Principal Langworthy and I have some fun ideas about how to bring our families and staff together!

"Finally, I want to thank you for sharing your students with us. They are the reason we're here, and we take our responsibility very seriously. In keeping with my letter of introduction last spring, our motto for this school year is 'Have Courage and Be Kind.' It can take courage to speak the truth, to keep trying despite challenges, to ask for help, and to do what's right--and to be kind while doing it can sometimes be difficult. But that is my commitment to you, to your children, and to my staff, and it's a big part of what will help our students to grow and succeed. Here's looking forward to a fantastic year!"
