phobic

Fear of spiders. Fear of heights. Fear of missing out.

If there's a hang-up, the Pioneer Marching Panthers have it covered in their 2022 field show, "Phobic".

Director April Woolley describes it thusly:

"The first movement in 'Phobic' is Acrophobia, which is fear of heights. The second is Nyctophobia, which is fear of the dark. And the third movement is Arachnophobia, which is fear of spiders.

"Drum majors and soloists featured in this year's show are Jackson Woolley, Kayla Price and Madison Hewitt.

"The idea came from all of the instructors when we started thinking about what common fears were. It really lends itself well to visual and musical elements.

"During the afraid-of-the dark-section, the students play with blindfolds on to represent their fear of the dark. This is a great lesson in listening since for that small section they cannot see the drum major."

Spectators have several more chances to catch "Phobic." On Saturday, Oct. 1, the Marching Panthers will compete at Lancaster High School.  Then they travel to Victor High School on Oct. 15. They appear in Orchard Park on Oct. 22, and finally the New York State Field Band Conference at Syracuse's Carrier Dome on Oct. 30.
