budget

The process of planning the 2022-23 budget has started, the Pioneer Board of Education learned at its regular meeting Nov. 16.

Assistant Superintendent Nick Silvaroli shared the 2022-23 budget planning calendar. He said he has already provided budget development information with building administrators and department heads, with a deadline of next month for completion.

The board will host a public budget information session at its regular meeting on January 18, during which Mr. Silvaroli will share a preliminary fiscal overview.

By the Feb. 1 meeting, Governor Hochul will have unveiled the state's 2022-23 spending plan particularly with regard to education. Also at that meeting, Mr. Silvaroli plans to start reviewing specific areas of expenditures.

Department and building budgets will be highlighted at the March 1 meeting. Mr. Silvaroli that night is also scheduled to present the first draft of the complete 2022-23 general fund budget.

More budget discussion will follow on March 15 and April 5. The board is scheduled to act on the proposal at its April 19, 2022 meeting.

All the target dates in the budget calendar are dependent on the state Legislature adopting a budget on time, Mr. Silvaroli said.

Petitions for candidates to run for terms on the Board of Education are due April 18, which is also the deadline for any additional propositions to be put before the voters. The board is currently considering a 2022 capital improvement project.

On Tuesday, May 3, the board will host a public budget hearing and Meet the Candidates session prior to its regular meeting.  The budget vote and board of education election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 17, at the high school.
