The New York State Education Department (NYSED) recently announced the next phase of NY Inspires, a statewide initiative designed to modernize graduation requirements and better prepare students for college, careers, and civic life.
While many details are still being developed, these changes represent one of the most significant shifts in New York's graduation system in decades. The goal is to maintain high academic standards while providing students with more opportunities to demonstrate what they know and can do.
One New York State Diploma
Beginning with students graduating in 2028, New York State plans to transition from the current diploma structure, which includes Local Diplomas, Regents Diplomas, and Regents Diplomas with Advanced Designation, to one New York State high school diploma.
Students will still have opportunities to distinguish their achievements through seals and endorsements that recognize accomplishments in specific areas of study and learning.
Regents Exams Are Not Going Away
A common misconception is that Regents examinations are being eliminated. That is not the case.
Regents exams will continue to be administered and will remain an important measure of student achievement aligned to New York State learning standards. However, students will no longer be required to pass a prescribed set of Regents exams in order to earn a diploma.
Instead, Regents examinations will serve as one measure among several that help schools evaluate student learning and achievement.
A Broader View of Student Success
NY Inspires reflects a growing emphasis on providing students with multiple ways to demonstrate learning.
Under the new framework, schools will be encouraged to consider a variety of evidence, including:
· Classroom assessments
· Student projects and performance tasks
· Work-based learning experiences
· Educator observations
· State assessments, including Regents examinations
This approach is intended to provide a more complete picture of student growth, achievement, and readiness for life after high school.
