Jonathan Clayson, Agriculture teacher and an FFA advisor at Pioneer High School, has been honored in the Outstanding Service area at the annual awards of the New York Association of Agriculture Educators (NYAAE).
NYAAE held its annual conference at Lake Oswegatchie in June 2026. Outstanding agriculture educators from across New York State were recognized for their dedication, leadership, and commitment to agricultural education
The annual conference celebrates excellence in agricultural education by recognizing teachers whose passion for student success, innovative instruction, and service to their schools and communities exemplify the highest standards of the profession.
The award states, "Jon Clayson has been an agricultural educator for 26 years and describes agricultural education not just as a job but a way of life. He values - and embodies ~ dedication, loyalty, volunteerism, strategic leadership and a confident humility. He credits FF A with sculpting his life, from time spent as a member and officer to years at Oswegatchie as a counselor, maintenance director and program director.
"He developed his sense of service learning right here [at the camp], spending his off time helping to keep camp going, keep camp clean and even occasionally keep camp fed. As a teacher, he believes he must be dedicated to the students he teaches, the school he serves and the organization that built his life. His service extends beyond his local program, spending nights, weekends and mid-week moments in mentoring sessions, zoom committee meetings and board sessions.
"He never grows tired talking to ag teachers and sharing experiences, listening to struggles and helping others overcome adversity. He has prompted and hosted conferences to help support the development of mechanical skills, helping other teachers grow in skill and confidence for their own programs. He has helped to advocate in Albany, helped to secure funds to power state programs, and helped to thoughtfully shape policy for our organization.
"Perhaps one of his most passionate endeavors, and one that has impacted each of us so significantly, is his work with the New York FFA Foundation. He's helped to raise more than $6 million, supported the construction of of a $3.5 million dining facility here at Oswegatchie, supported an annual project that raises more than $100,000each year and been a constant presence at the duck race, the golf tournament and in cornerstone restoration projects. He's also extended his heart of service to others, inviting them (and empowering them) to be part of a worthy cause when he works.with students to restore tractor after tractor that are raffled off to benefit New York FFA.
"Jon models passionate professionalism, serving beyond FFA as part of his town government, church and greater community. He sets an example for others about then impact that can be made when we see others and their needs and choose to step up and serve. While Jon would tell you he doesn't seek to be awarded, we are all better off when we celebrate contributions worth repeating. And the world needs more servant leaders like Jon has consistently proven to be."
