The Pioneer Middle School LOTE (Language Other Than English) Club is proposing the first 8th grade field trip to Montreal since 2013.

Foreign language teachers Julianna Brnik and Brenda McKenzie addressed the Pioneer Board of Education at its Oct. 1 regular meeting. They said they are trying to get at least 70 students to attend at a cost of about $1000 each. Fund-raisers are planned to help trim the cost.

Students would miss two days of school in the spring (March 21-24), the teachers said. They and several chaperones would accompany students by bus coach across the border to see the sights, practice the French they have learned, and immerse themselves in food and culture. The club is working with Jump Street Travel on trip plans.

Organizers plan to have a parent meeting to offer information on the field trip.

Meanwhile, Athletic Director Christopher Edwards discussed the current state and future plans for the athletics program at Pioneer. He highlighted the sports offered in the fall, winter, and spring, and noted that 451 students signed up for fall athletics, with 143 being middle school students.

Mr. Edwards also mentioned the planned addition of modified Competitive Cheer and the potential reintroduction of JV softball. He emphasized the importance of budget development for the upcoming year and the need for increased student participation to support all athletics initiatives.

He also discussed the formation and objectives of the Athletic Leadership Council, a group of 15 diverse student-athletes from various sports. The council aims to develop student leaders and provide a platform for them to share their ideas and perspectives.

Mr. Edwards also highlighted the school's efforts to enhance the student experience and showcase its athletes, including the first fall Media Day and the related use of a new social media tool for coaches. The department also plans to host a Unified Club award ceremony and is considering plans for a spring homecoming.

Mr. Edwards also expressed appreciation for the Board of Education's efforts and support.
