TOP 20 STUDENTS: CLASS OF 2019
Pioneer High School principal Mark Schultz has announced the following top 20 academic performers for the Class of 2019:
Valedictorian Maxwell Hughes, son of Dawn and Mark Hughes, plans to attend University of Rochester and will major in Biology. His career goal is to be a Doctor or Researcher. Maxwell has participated in Cross Country (Treasurer and Captain), Indoor Track (Treasurer and Captain), Outdoor Track (Captain), Marching Band, and Jazz Band. He is also employed at McDonald‘s.
Salutatorian Alex Buncy is the daughter of Megan and Dave Buncy. She plans to attend SUNY Binghamton and will major in Biology. Alex’s career goal is to be an Anesthesiologist. Alex has been in involved in many extracurricular activities during high school including: Captain of Varsity softball, Captain of Varsity Volleyball, NHS, and a Student Council Member. Alex is a volunteer at the Chaffee Sardinia Fire Department and works part time at McDonald's.
Helena Blackwell, daughter of Jennifer and Paul Blackwell, plans to attend SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music to major in Music Education. Helena’s career goal is to be a Music Teacher. Helena states that she has been in involved in “literally everything music related" including jazz band, show choir, musicals, wind ensemble, marching band, the fall play, and has been a singer for Hope Lutheren Church’s praise band.
Riley Johnston, is the son of Ted and Tracy Johnston, and plans to attend Rochester Institute of Technology to major in Web and Mobile Computing. Riley’s career goal is a career in software engineering and creation. Riley has been involved in the following extracurricular activities for the High School: VEX Robotics (as a driver and programmer) and National Honor Society. His hobbies include content creation on Twitter, Twitch and YouTube, semi-pro CS:GO player, and volunteering at the Wyoming County 4-H Youth Group.
Jami Smith, daughter of Bill and Deb Smith, plans to attend Alfred State College and will major in Nursing. Jami’s career goal is to be a Pediatric Nurse. Jami has been in involved in a number of extracurricular activities including: Girls Varsity as captain, Bowling Team, National Honor Society, Tom Rule II Bowling League, and Sunday Adult/Youth Bowling League. She is an active volunteer at the Chaffee Sardinia Fire Department and works for the Recreation Program for the Town of Sardinia.
Scott Heldwein, is the son of Liza and David Heldwein. Scott plans to attend George Mason University in Washinington D.C. and will major in Chemistry. Scott’s career goal is to be a Physician-Oncologist. During high school, Scott has been in involved in NHS, Pioneer Pro, and FBLA (secretary). Scott has also been employed at Marco's in Arcade during his junior and senior year. During his senior year, Scott was selected as a research intern at Roswell Park and completed a year long internship. Scott had also interned as a research assistant during his junior year at the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute.
Jeffrey Schalberg, son of Jennifer and Thomas Schalberg, plans to attend Syracuse University and major in Aerospace Engineering. Jeff’s career goal is to work at a major Aerospace/Aeronautical company such as SpaceX, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, NASA or MOOG. During high school Jeff has been involved in VEX Robotics as a builder and coder, National Honor Society, served as an auxiliary member at the VFW Post #5260, volunteered as a Accolyte (ah-kuh-light) at St. Jude Parish, and participated in Computer and Radio Club. His hobbies include sailing, model rocketry, technology activities and golfing.
Ian Laird, son of Scott and Rebecca Laird, plans to attend Elim Bible Institute and College to major in their Launch Certificate Program before transferring to SUNY Fredonia. Ian’s career goal is to be an Earth Science Teacher . Ian has been involved in the following extracurricular activities during High School: Senior play, musical stage crew, and NHS. His hobbies include graphic design, science, video games, and taking care of his pets and farm animals.
Sam Hyman is the son of Denise and Jim Hyman. Sam plans to attend Niagara County Community College and will major in Business Management. Sam’s career goals are to work in upper management at a company of his desire. Sam has been secretary of the senior class, captain of varsity golf for three years, volunteering at First Baptist Church, peer mentoring, student government, and NHS. He is currently employed at Weber City Deli, enjoys playing golf, fishing, and shed hunting with his dogs.
Sydney Wiseman, daughter of Angela and Daryl Wiseman, plans to attend SUNY Fredonia and will major in Music Education. Sydney’s career goal is to teach Music and be a Band Director. Sydney has been in involved in numerous extracurricular activities during High School including: drum major for the Pioneer Marching Band, a member of the jazz band, Pioneer Community Band, National Honor Society, and pit orchestra. Outside of school Sydney works part time at McDonald's, is a referee for Arcade Area Youth Soccer,and plays trumpet at Hope Lutheran Church.
Madison Bainbridge, is the daughter of Ben and Stacy Bainbridge. She plans to attend Daemen College and will major in Physical Therapy. Madison has been involved in the following extracurricular activities for the High School: varisity soccer (captain), varsity basketball (captain), varsity track (captain), SJLAP (Student Justice League at Pioneer), Student government, and peer mentoring. She is interested in herpetology (the study of reptiles and amphibians).
Kerianne Alpin, daughter of Mary Songster-Alpin and James Alpin, plans to take a year or two off. Her career goal is to be a professional (equestrian athlete). Kerianne has been involved in the following High School and Community Extracurricular Activities: National Honor Society, Pioneer Rifle Team, member of the Allegany County 4-H , and has been Captain of several teams for knowledge-based competitions. She spends all of her free time training for equestrian competitions with Houghton College professors. After graduation she will be an intern for an Australian international eventer in Philadelphia, PA to learn more about the sport and work her way up the levels of eventing.
Anna Sonner is the daughter of Michael and Rebecca Sonner. She plans to attend SUNY Geneseo and will major in Adolescent Special Education. Anna’s career goals is to become an Elementary Special Ed Teacher. Anna has been involved in the following extracurricular activities for the High School and Community; Marching Band and National Honor Society. Her hobbies include working part time at Crabb Oil and volunteering around the WNY area.
Kelsey Matuszak daughter of Jennifer Matuszak, plans to attend Medaille College and will major in Psychology. Kelsey’s career goal is to earn her doctorate in Clinical Psychology. During high school, Kelsey has been in involved as a student representative on the Board of Education, President of Unified Basketball, a student Government council Member, NHS member and Pioneer Pro. She has played Varsity soccer, varsity track, and worked as a staff member at Beaver Meadow family campground.
Julia Brzezicki, daughter of Michael and Jennifer Brzezicki, plans to attend Geneseo and will major in Biology. Julia’s career goal is to be a K9 officer with the Department of Environmental Conservation. Julia has been in involved in student government (vice president), field hockey (4 years varsity), unified basketball (3 yrs), peer mentoring and SJLAP (Student Justice League at Pioneer). Julia has been employed at Nicolo's Restaurant (hostess) and fosters dogs.
Samantha Salzler, daughter of Todd and Lisa Salzler, plans to attend Alfred State College and will major in Digital Media and Animation. Samantha’s career goal is to become an animator and make a well-known series or movie. Samantha has been involved in many extracurricular activities including: School Musicals (dance captain and student choreographer), NHS, Varsity swimming (captain), color guard, and a youth leader at her church. She is also a tap dance teacher at Grace church and enjoys painting, drawing, writing, crocheting and napping.
Morgan Brouse, daughter of Todd and Donna Catalano, plans to attend SUNY Fredonia and will major in Early Childhood Education. Morgan’s career goal is to become a teacher. Morgan has been involved in student government, National Honor Society, peer mentoring, and SJLAP (Student Justice League at Pioneer). She also works at McDonald’s and Nicolo’s.
Joe Lamoureux, son of Charles and Kath Lamoureux, plans to attend SUNY JCC and will major in Fine arts and music. Joe’s career goal is becoming a High School Teacher. Joe has been in involved with his band Nuclear Winter serving as Manager/Writer, playing in a Classic rock band, Jazz band, and NHS. Hobbies include playing guitar, writing music, and instrument repair.
Allison Miley, is the daughter of Amy and Pat Miley. She plans to attend SUNY Brockport and will major in Psychology. Allison’s career goal is to be a Child Psychologist. Allison has been a peer mentor. She has also worked part time at Krolicks BBQ (3 yrs) and John and Mary's (3 yrs).
Nick Schiener, son of John and Denise Schiener, plans to attend UB and will major in mechanical engineering. Nick’s career goal is to be an automotive engineer. Nick has been involved in marching band and robotics. His hobbies include making music and visual effects.
