Pioneer's latest Capital Project—approved by voters in 2018—is moving along according to schedule, and construction at Pioneer Middle School is set to begin early in June, officials said.

The construction at the Middle School includes the highlight of the project, a full renovation of the music suite. The existing music space, which is original to the 1975 building, in addition to some adjacent spaces will be completely cleared out to make way for the construction of a new state-of-the-art music suite.

Included within the new music suite will be:

  • Properly sized and acoustically treated Orchestra, Choral and Band rooms
  • State-of-the-art practice rooms
  • Appropriate storage for instruments
  • Office space for the middle school music teachers
  • State-of-the-art sound and visual technology

Beginning the week of June 3, the contents of the existing music suite will be removed in preparation for demolition work. Demolition will include taking down interior walls and ceilings, and abatement of old asbestos flooring. All of the demolition work, including the abatement of the asbestos floor tile will occur after regular school hours from 3pm to 11pm.

The area, including the hallway leading to the music suite, will be closed off during demolition, and abatement of the tile will be performed in accordance with federal guidelines for asbestos removal. Demolition is anticipated to take approximately 3 to 4 weeks, upon which the extensive build-out of the new music suite will begin.

The new music suite is scheduled to be complete and ready for students by mid-October 2019.
