In Air Rifle, the competitors must shoot a target in the prone position (laying down), offhand (standing) and kneeling positions. Medals can be won in each position, for aggregate score, or team score.
The team, under the direction of Frank Miga, has only been in existence for three years. Powerhouse teams from Lancaster, Alden, and Clarence have had decades to build their programs.
"Understandingly, I am very proud of what the team has accomplished this year," Mr. Miga said.
Pioneer edged Lancaster and Clarence out by 1 point in the Section VI championships to secure this opportunity. Starters on the team include Arran Schmidt, Trevor Harrington, Dylan Romance, Shaughn Shepherd, and 8th grade standout Cohen Lyons.
Air Rifle uses a .177 mm pellet. Competitors shoot at a bullseye with the center smaller than the diameter of a pencil eraser.
The competition was held at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center on the campus of West Point. It is the premier NCAA Division 1 rifle range.
