Pioneer High School's wrestling team brought home a sixth straight ECIC division championship, with a thrilling, come-from-behing win over Iroquois, 31-30, on Jan. 8.
Down 30-19 with two matches to go, coach Chris Edwards sent his senior heavyweights, Trevor Smith and Mike Rigerman, in to try to steal the win. They responded with pins, each worth six points, and the match was won.
At the time of the match, Pioneer was ranked #2 in Western New York, while Iroquois was #3. The Panthers were also ranked 7th in the state.
Rigerman secured a first-period pin at 220 pounds, while Smith did the same at 285 pounds. The Chiefs are coached by Pioneer grad Troy Almeter.
Xander Kirsch, Daniel Kirsch, Ather Phommatha, Kam Riordan, Josh Oun, and Alex Schenk all secured wins for the Panthers (5-0 in ECIC Divison II, and 9-3 overall). The Panthers have a 42-0 record in league play over the last six seasons.
