BUCKET FILLING PART OF CHARACTER ED EFFORTS

Pioneer Central School at Delevan Elementary will once again encourage students to be bucket-fillers in 2019-20.

As part of Delevan's PBIS (Positive Behaviors, Interventions and Supports) program and character education, the school's kindness initiative will draw from lessons found in the book, "Have You Filled a Bucket Today? A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids", by Carol McCloud.

Through this book students learn that everyone in the world has an invisible bucket that holds all their good thoughts and feelings. When you do something kind for someone you fill their bucket - and yours gets filled up too. When you do something hurtful or unkind, you "dip" into someone else's bucket - but you can't take those good feelings for yourself.

"In the last three years, we have learned that filling buckets is easy, doesn't take much time, doesn't cost and money and feels good - also that kindness is contagious," said Tiffany Giannichi, Delevan principal.

Parents can play a big role by urging bucket-filling at home, modeling efforts by the school. It is easy to do—just start your own bucket to fill.
