Hello. My name is Michael Herron and I'm a 9th grade ELA teacher in the high school.
I am entering my fifteenth year of teaching within secondary education. I actually began my career in Melbourne, Australia, where I taught English, Drama, and Humanities for three years at Carey Grammar, an internationally renowned IB school. After relocating back to Buffalo in May 2007, I was hired at Lake Shore in Angola, N.Y. I began my career at Pioneer in 2010.
I have a diverse educational background that includes graphic arts, English, literacy, and technology. I am also very involved in extracurricular activities, with seven years experience coaching Varsity Track & Field, and Cross Country. I was a distance runner in college and this is a passionate pursuit that I love to share with students!
I live in Lancaster and commute to Pioneer every day. My children are Cruz (14), Jules (11), and Hudson (10). While I'm home I enjoy running, reading, and playing sports. I still skateboard and snowboard. I love to golf. I even play sand-court volleyball during the summer months. I definitely try to keep sports and fun alive in the classroom too!
I use technology in a progressive manner that improves teaching and learning. The English 9 Portal page on this "teacher site" will eventually be the hub that launches many of my daily lessons. Along with the daily design of our ninth grade ELA curriculum, I will equip students with tools that have real life application in the 21st century.
I'm closing with some personal notes. I am a movie lover. I enjoy all aspects of film and I have tried my hand at various levels of film making since I was a young boy. My favorite director is Wes Anderson. Some of my favorite films are The Royal Tenenbaums, Big Fish, and Blackhawk Down, to name a few. I also spend a lot of time listening to, and loving, many genres of music.
This site is a living document that will change as the year progresses. Thank you for taking the time to read and learn about who I am, where I come from, and what I hope to accomplish here at Pioneer High School. Let's have a great year!
