volleyball and football

Students who participate in football, volleyball and cheerleading will have to wait until spring for their sports season.

The New York State Public High School Athletics Association (NYSPHSAA) voted on Sept. 9 to delay those high-risk sports seasons until March 1, 2021. The move was made to address NYSPHSAA member concerns about COVID-19.

Some have cited the lack of state guidelines for conducting practices and games in football, volleyball and cheerleading.

The revised season for high-risk fall sports will be known as “Fall Sports Season II”. As a result, the scheduled spring season (consisting of regularly scheduled spring sports) will begin practices on April 19. This will allow some multi-sport athletes to take part.

Low-risk sports are still a go and can begin practicing on September 21, competing within their section or league until October 19. Fall regional and state championships have already been canceled. Low-risk sports include cross country, girls swimming & diving, soccer, field hockey, and golf.

Winter sports have already been delayed to the end of November. No other decisions have been made.
