Each night your child will bring his/her take-home book to read to you. This should be a happy, stress-free experience which will help to improve your child's overall reading. The book he/she brings home will have been used for the reading lesson that day, so rereading it will solidify the new learning that took place during the original lesson. It also provides an opportunity for you to celebrate your child as an independent reader, which helps to boost his/her confidence and strengthen his/her skills.I don't adhere to a philosophy of daily homework in 1st grade. Rather, if your child needs extra practice in a specific skill for mastery of it, I might send an activity home for your child to complete. This is always done sparingly and on an as-needed basis.
