During the summer I had the amazing opportunity to travel to Central Europe.  I visited the countries of France, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, and the Czech Republic

Even though this trip undoubtedly yielded many unexpected curriculum ties, it directly related to my teaching about WWII, the Jewish culture, the unfair treatment of Jews, the horrors of life in the Concentration Camps as well as, world history in general.  Some of the highlights of the trip included visits to the Holocaust Memorial, Checkpoint Charlie Museum, Berlin Wall, Brandenburg Gate, Hitler's Bunker, Warsaw Ghetto, Auschwitz, Oskar Schindler's Factory, Bohaterow Ghetto, Jewish Quarters in Prague, and the grave of Franz Kafka.

When I began my teaching career here at Pioneer I taught ELA and Social Studies which created, for me,  a love for history and a curiosity about the Holocaust.  For many years now, Maura Birdd and I have enjoyed integrating our 8th grade ELA and social studies curriculums.  I personally have, over the years, worked to broaden my own knowledge of many historical subjects.  Essentially, the 8th graders on our team are taught about this time period mainly by way of the literature they are exposed to.  This literature leads to many interesting and thought provoking discussions.  The students read the play “The Diary of Anne Frank”, the novel Milkweed, various poems, and even a picture book, Terrible Things , which is an allegory of the Holocaust.  In addition, they write poetry that portrays the Holocaust through vivid imagery.

I truly believe that my experiences this summer will enhance their learning and bring the history to life for them.  I certainly have gained more personal knowledge to share with them!  The photographs below are just a sampling of the over 1200 that I took--I hope it will help the students visualize the past and present.
