• I'm going to be an EMT because.....

Alright, I am going to be honest with all of you.  This course is a difficult course – it is worth 7 college credits.  You can EARN these college credits, but you must work hard.  I will always be available for extra help, but you need to put in a lot of effort and dedication on your own part.  It always helps to have an interest in what you are learning, so I would like for you to seek out your interest/drive in becoming an EMT.

I have been an EMT for over 10 years.  I became an EMT mainly because my boyfriend (now he’s my husband) was quite involved with EMS.  It seemed rather logical to become one since I had been certified in CPR/First Aid from the time I was 8 years old, and I became a lifeguard at 15.  Anyways, I always liked watching Rescue 911 and Emergency (way before your guys’ time!!).  Since I have been an EMT, I have had many rewarding experiences, but I would have to say it matters most when it’s your own family.  I have saved my son from choking, and I helped my mom when she had a finger avulsion (no more high fiving my mom – it’s just a high four now!).  I sincerely hope that you never have to use the skills that are taught in this class, but that is highly unlikely.  I hope that you will take this class seriously and gain as much knowledge and skill as possible.  I would like you to do a little soul searching at this point, and answer the question “What makes you want to become an EMT?”  Please don’t write me a ten page paper here – just a paragraph or two.  Some thoughts to help you along – have you ever been in an emergency situation where you needed help, have you ever been in an emergency situation where you helped someone else – just tell me a little bit about your reasons for taking this class, and how you hope to apply it to your life.
