    Grade 8

8th Grade Health Education explores 3 areas of Health of great importance to our students. Heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death for Americans. The 8th grade nutrition unit focuses on healthy choices based on the food pyramid. Diet analysis, fast food trends, and current nutritional research build a base for good choices and better health.
Drug Education in 8th grade provides a unique opportunity for our students to enter the world of health promotion. The classroom becomes a public relations firm hired to promote a drug free lifestyle to fellow Middle School students. Teams vie for positive assessments from their CEOs (Mrs. Landahl and Mrs. Lutz) and fellow company members. Teams prepare a commercial, a "waiting room" pamphlet, a billboard, a classroom presentation and an evaluating activity to assist their fellow company members to become experts in promoting a healthy, drug free lifestyle. Finally, 8th grade students focus on Love Education with help from W.A.I.T. training. W.A.I.T. stands for "Why am I tempted?" Students learn about the importance of self-knowledge, relationship building and abstinence until marriage. Media, peer and societal pressures to become sexually active are exposed and strategies for resisting pressures are practiced.
